Carers

CARERS

A carer is anyone, child or adult, who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of a long term condition or disability. We provide carers packs with information and helpful telephone numbers, signposting to other services that may help in our local area, Carers support group and someone to talk with to resolve any questions or issues that might arise.

YOUNG CARERS

A Young Carer is someone aged 25 years or under who cares for a member of the family or another individual because they have an illness disability, mental health or drugs misuse. If you are aged 16-25 and care for someone, you are also known as Young Adult Carer.

South Tyneside have recently launched the first Young Carers ID Card;

We have listened to young carers and co-produced their very own ID card which will help identify and support young carers in education and healthcare settings. The purpose of the card is to:

  • Help raise awareness of young carer’s responsibilities and give formal recognition to their role.
  • Discreetly let people know about their caring responsibilities without having to repeatedly share personal details.
  • Give the Young Carer confidence to ask for help or understanding from professionals.
  • Prompt discussions between staff and the Young Carer to understand their needs and make reasonable adjustments to support them
